Starting with why

Communities don’t thrive by chance. They thrive because someone, somewhere, started with a clear ‘why’—a purpose that resonates and inspires, which ultimately guides every decision that follows. Whether it’s launching a downtown revitalization initiative or spearheading a massive development project, starting with ‘why’ is the difference between simply “going through the motions” and providing a lasting impact.

Every community has needs. Many are obvious: Jobs. Attainable Housing. Safety. Beautification. When these needs are lacking it can hinder other needs like a sense of belonging, identity, pride and hope. If the deeper ‘why’ in what we do everyday is skipped over, the mission can lose value and overall purpose. Typically, that’s how communities end up only “checking boxes” and missing out on the opportunities to change lives for the better.

Any time I feel like the ‘why’ might be fuzzy or unclear, I get out of the office and go out into the community and take a good conscious, focused look around. It hasn’t failed yet. It never takes too long once I step out of my office doors to see why it clearly matters. One of the best reminders is a school bus.

Recently, I watched a line of students anywhere from kindergarten to high school load up on the school bus (or as we called it when I was in school “The Cheesewagon”). There was one little boy dancing as he walked, a little girl in pink was holding an older girl’s hand as they walked… and a few “dragging the line” in slow motion. The latter of the students reminded me a lot of myself. I was never in any hurry to get to school in the mornings either!

Earlier this week, I was fortunate to be at the table with the Georgia FLEX students at Early County High School. It was inspiring to hear about their business plans and help guide them towards future successful, local business ownership. Those students, too, were transported by school bus.

In short, if you ever need a clear reminder of ‘why’ we are doing all these things – look for a “cheesewagon” somewhere around town or out in the country because they are truly transporting the future of Early County and it really matters.

Once again, the purpose in all that we do for our community should be the root that feeds the entire effort. It stays behind the work, while telling the story that motivates participation. Even when challenges head our way, the purpose can serve as not only the anchor – but also the compass for navigating tough decisions.

With a clear, collective purpose a real community movement can happen. Without it – it’s nothing more than going through the motions. If the effort and time is taken to go through these motions- it only makes sense for it to be beneficial and possess value. Otherwise, what’s the point?

As the end of the year approaches, I’d like to personally and professionally ask you to take a moment to consider your ‘why’ and if it truly aligns with the mission to provide avenues towards providing a lasting, better quality of life for everyone in Early County.

I’d also like to recommend the book, “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. I’ve been reading a lot of different books these days, but this is one that has given the Office of Economic Development a wonderful, objective insight into ‘why’ it matters.
